Children with MTHFR, or Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase, deficiency may be at risk for a serious and potentially life threatening reaction to Nitrous Oxide anesthesia. Commonly used for pediatric dental and some other medical procedures that require a child be calm and still, Nitrous Oxide has been demonstrated to deactivate B12 in children with a mutation of the MTHFR gene that produces the MTHFR enzyme. When the mutation, also called polymorphism, results in a deficiency of the MTHFR enzyme, children can suffer serious harm from this interference with B12.
